AbstractAbstract. The objective of this work was to elaborate an agricultural land use map and to estimate planted areas for the crop year of 2003/04 in 14 municipalities of the Regional Administration of Limeira, São Paulo State, Brazil. Images were acquired on four dates (15/10/03, 19/01/04, 08/04/04, 04/08/04) by Landsat-5TM and on two dates (16/03/04, 24/07/04) by CBERS-2CCD & IR-MSS. They were analyzed in two steps: a) digitally through segmentation and classification techniques; and b) visually through interpretation on computer screen. Both Landsat and CBERS images acquired at key periods of agricultural activities were valuable to identify different land use patterns. Field work confirmed that the images were useful to accurate identify sugarcane, pasture, forest and reforestation areas. Adult citrus was also well identified, but some confusion with coffee crop was observed. Young citrus plantation could only be identified with field work, but they were mainly close to adult citrus plantations. Annual summer crops were well differentiated according to their crop growing cycle and spectral behavior.
